Employee Evaluations Are Important
Next to discipline, employee evaluations are probably the most despised part of many supervisors’ managerial duties. However, evaluations are critical tools that should not be ignored.
There is no question that employers, managers, and supervisors often do not fairly or accurately complete employee evaluations. As a result, in many employment-related lawsuits involving discrimination claims, an employer might justify the termination of an employee for years of bad behavior and performance yet the employee evaluations will show that the employee has been given satisfactory or better ratings on his or her performance with no mention of behavioral issues.
So how does an employer use employee evaluations effectively? It should thoroughly train its supervisors and managers to:
• Be honest
• Be fair
• Be precise
• Be succinct
• Be careful, and
• Be thorough
Despite the attention to detail that this requires, it will pay off in the end.
